Winterizing your Skin

The season has arrived once more – the air is fresh, and we're wrapped in warm sweaters, enjoying hot chocolate from festive cups.

However, as the temperature falls, our skin's moisture levels also decrease. Winter's severity often leads to typical skin issues like dryness, dullness, and dehydration.

To counter this, we must adjust our skincare routine with the changing seasons to protect our skin from harsh winds and freezing temperatures, ensuring it remains supple, resilient, and healthy.

At MindBodyBeauty Aesthetics, we offer the best winter skincare products, which have shown excellent results for our clients.

Here's your guide:

Dryness and Dehydration

Your skin might need extra care during the winter months. Low humidity, extreme cold, and fluctuating indoor and outdoor environments can damage the skin's protective outer layer. Essential lipids between cells are stripped away, leaving dangerous gaps in the natural barrier. The result? Irritants can penetrate, causing sensitivity and inflammation, while essential moisture is rapidly lost. How might your skin feel? Dry, tight, itchy, thirsty, and possibly tingling or stinging. It can appear dull, flaky, drier around the eyes, and possibly pink on the cheeks. Increased sensitivity and reactivity to usual products and makeup is also a common consequence of barrier gaps.

Your hands can also suffer during the colder months as they are exposed to the elements. This, combined with frequent hand washing and generous use of antibacterial hand sanitizer to fight off colds, can lead to extremely dry, painfully cracked skin. The skin on the legs and the rest of the body may also become reptilian-like due to hot bubble baths, thicker petroleum-based creams, and restrictive clothing layers that trap dead cells. This can even cause breakouts on the chest and back in acne-prone individuals. If you naturally have sensitive skin or suffer from eczema or rosacea, flare-ups are more common in colder temperatures. Nylon, wool sweaters, and dry central heating systems can worsen the condition. Try to wear 100% cotton and natural fabrics and invest in a humidifier for dry indoor environments.

Some winter skincare tips are:

For your face:

  • Replace your foaming cleanser with a soothing gel cream to replenish lipids and soothe sensitivity. Try Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Cleanser.

  • Gently remove flaky, dull skin cells with Daily Resurfacer that smooths and brightens while hydrating the skin simultaneously.

  • Layer on hydration and reduce tightness by spritzing after cleansing and throughout the day over makeup. Choose from MultiActive Toner, Antioxidant HydraMist, or UltraCalming Mist.

  • For sore, red, irritated skin, comfort with a generous application of UltraCalming Serum Concentrate and use UltraCalming Relief Masque a few times a week to soothe and calm.

  • Switch to a heavier moisturizer for more nourishment and protection, like Super Rich Repair for day and night.

  • If it’s extremely cold, try a healing balm like Climate Control on exposed areas like lips, nose, and cheekbones for extra protection and healing.

For the body and hands:

  • Avoid hot water by using lukewarm water instead, pat skin dry, don’t rub, and while the skin is still damp, apply your body lotion immediately, avoiding those with artificial color and fragrance. Try Dermalogica’s Ultra Rich Body Cream for supreme nourishment and protection from the elements.

  • With shower and bath products, avoid soap, artificial fragrance, and high-foam products as they dehydrate the skin. Alternatively, add a few pumps of aromatherapy oil to your bath. Try Dermalogica’s Stress Relief Treatment Oil and Conditioning Body Wash.

  • Effortlessly slough off dead cells by adding HydroActive Mineral Salts to the bath for a relaxing and exfoliating soak. If you prefer to shower, try Dermalogica’s Exfoliating Body Scrub and use gentle circular movements, paying special attention to knees, elbows, and hands. For super all-over smoothness, use with the Ultimate Buffing Cloth.

  • Opt for the paraffin dip the next time you get a manicure; it’s good for locking in moisture.

  • Wear 100% cotton gloves to bed over a healing cream like Multivitamin Hand and Nail Treatment; this speeds up absorption, and you’ll wake up with super soft hands.
